‘Digital Eavesdropping’: Unilever Seeks to Capitalise On Vaseline’s TikTok Moment.
Originally found over 150 years ago in the oil fields of Pennsylvania, the simple jar of Vaseline could hardly be considered an clear candidate for digital platform algorithms.
However, its rise as a popular subject on TikTok has thrust it into the lead of an marketing transformation, seeing big businesses investing heavily in content creators and putting fewer resources into advertising goods in traditional media.
A Journey from Drilling to Digital
The petroleum jelly was first manufactured in the 1870s by a chemist, Robert Cheeseborough, who observed drillers using on their skin with a derivative of drilling. Currently, a wave of amateur-created clips have recorded its extensive utilization in “life hacks”.
It has been touted as a fix for dirty sneakers or making fragrance last longer, and also a remedy for noisy doorways. Its use has even extended to combat the nuisance of snack dust adhering to hands.
Capitalising on the Conversation
Detecting the product’s new life online, marketers at Unilever amplified the hacks by asking their own scientists to test them and letting the content creators in on the results.
Assertions that it diminished the sting of chili on the mouth were given the thumbs up. Similarly supported were ideas it could extend fragrance and restore leather handbags. Proposals that it might whiten teeth or lengthen eyelashes were refuted.
A Plan Built on ‘Social Listening’
Print ads and broadcast spots would once have dominated Unilever’s advertising drive. However, this online trend has led decision-makers to dramatically increase investment in content creators.
This observation of social channels to guide corporate planning has been labeled “social listening”. Unilever's CEO, recently appointed, has suggested it is aiming to spend half of its colossal advertising budget on digital creator content.
Shifting to Modern Engagement
A leading Unilever executive, who is heading the digital initiative, said the company was just evolving with contemporary approaches of connecting with customers. She said interacting online “without dampening the fun” was essential.
“How can companies join discussions credibly? This remains our core objective as brands, dating to when neighbors chatted over fences and sharing usage tips.
“The trend is shifting from a broadcast model, where we would just transmit messages … Currently, it's countless discussions, diverse communities. Changes in digital feeds means that these audiences appear specific, yet they are vast.
“Having your brand advocated by users, recommended by peers, this builds credibility and connection. Creators are critical to that. This word-of-mouth strategy is being amplified.”
A Seismic Media Shift
This plan mirrors dramatic transformations taking place in media consumption, with younger consumers spending more time on digital networks than television, magazines or radio.
The transition is visible in drops in traditional media advertising. Across Britain, ad revenues for leading TV channels have declined by over six hundred million pounds in actual value since the end of the last decade.
Influencer Marketing Expansion
This further signifies a media convergence as large companies almost become production houses themselves, collaborating with numerous influencers to enhance their items.
A commercial director at a major talent agency said: “Obviously there’s a flow of audiences from conventional channels and they’re spending a lot more time on digital video and image apps than they are viewing scheduled television or reading physical magazines.
“A lot of brands are telling us consumers have more faith in suggestions from the personalities they subscribe to over traditional advertisements. That’s a consistent trend.”
He added firms may also cut expenditures by focusing on influencers over big traditional media campaigns, which also permits simpler message refinement to gauge performance.
Such methods are increasing. Advertising spending on influencer marketing is growing fourfold quicker than total media spending. Stateside, it has more than doubled since 2021 and is forecast to attain substantial figures in 2025.
Traditional Media's Continued Place
Despite the huge changes, experts said they believed broadcast ads retained significant importance to play, as networks still held the capability to shape the national conversation.
The executive noted: “Among the most effective advertising investments is still the Super Bowl. It's not a matter of networks declaring: ‘We are no longer pertinent.’ The focus is on who seizes focus … There is undoubtedly a future for traditional media.”
