Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck on two occasions from corners in the first half to place their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the tally five minutes after the defender's opener, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine stops to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing the match official to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's side into third place in the Premier League, five points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and sit six points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in duties at both ends of pitch

After a drab weekday performance in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a mere two shots on goal, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his second in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo handled superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking finishing touch

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have worn off somewhat and fans headed to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a major concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' two recognised strikers - had netted only a single goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable record on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having space and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly delivered threatening crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.
